Why Overheating in Bed is Bad For Your Health

Hi, I’ve just put together a page of information about Overheating in Bed, which you can find by clicking this link.

I also explain on that page the history of how the Compatibility Blanket came about, and what we have learned over the years about the benefits of sleeping cool.

One of the most important things about sleeping cool is that you have the correct amount of REM sleep – as REM sleep is reduced by overheating.

“Overheating”, by the way, comes into affect at surprisingly low temperatures.  For example anything over 32 degrees C is meant to be reducing your REM sleep – whereas our normal body temperature is 37 degrees C.

With the correct and ideal sleep we should come out of our night’s sleep from a REM sleep phase, which is light sleep.  That way, we feel refreshed, awake and alert – which is good.

During a typical night’s sleep we cycle through different stages of sleep, and will sleep in REM a number of times.  We actually go through light sleep and deep sleep phases in a number of cycles – hopefully to end in REM Sleep.

Sleeping cool is one way to avoid REM sleep behaviour disorder.

By sleeping cool you will also avoid the problem of waking up in the middle of the night because of overheating.

Of course, while one partner is attempting to sleep cool, the other one, if there is a temperature difference – can be too cold.
That is why the Compatibility Blanket was invented.

The Adverse Effects of lack of sleep include problems associated with heart disease, a higher risk of accidents at work and outside work, diminished executive function, higher blood pressure, psychological problems, putting on weight, incorrect diet…. the list is huge.

REM Sleep

REM Sleep is short for Rapid Eye Movement sleep, and occurs during the lighter stages of sleep during the night, and part of your napping sleep during the day.

REM sleep has been attributed to creative problem solving, certain types of dreaming – and it is reported by many to be the best sleep stage to wake up from because you come out of a light phase of sleep where you are nearly awake.

When people wake up from deeper phases of sleep they can experience a groggy feeling called ‘sleep inertia’ while they attempt to wake up completely.

Sleep is quite a complicated state.  For example, during REM sleep the body is paralyzed so that the person who is dreaming does not act out their dreams while they are asleep.

If you find that you ARE punching or kicking, for example, in your sleep then you should visit your doctor to ensure that you do not have some underlying emotional or neurological problem.

Many people sleep under doonas/duvets and heavy comforters that can cause disturbed sleep, even waking up too hot at night because their body is overheating.

And often different partners in the same bed have different bed-covering requirements because one is hotter than the other.

Most often, not always it is the man that is feeling hotter – this can change for the woman after menopause when many women then find themselves the warmer of the two.

Sleeping cool is preferred for a number of reasons:

  • Temperatures above 32 degrees C starts to diminish the amount of REM sleep you get
  • Sleeping in a hot environment with the heat trapped by heavy bedcoverings has been associated with skin disorders (see Good Skin Book, Dr Hugh Molloy and Dr Garry Eggar).
  • There are questions being raised in relation to fertility problems for me when they get overheated.

Overheating While Sleeping Problem

While one partner feels to warm to sleep comfortably under some bed-coverings, the other partner, who might feel the cold more, is often feeling too cold to sleep properly.

The Compatibility Blanket has been designed to solve the problem of two bed partners that have different requirements in relation to sleeping temperatures.

Whether waking up because of overheating in bed, and the consequent lack of sleep, is considered a REM sleep behaviour disorder or not, it is very aggravating to experience, especially if it is happening night after night.
